Orange County’s Art Institute of California held its second annual “Rock The Runway” art and fashion show Saturday May 2, 2009. The institute's Fashion Design and Fashion Management program maintain this unique event to celebrate the programs 1 year old success.
Students at the Institutes Fashion design course are allowed to express their creativity by designing custom cut and sew modeling outfits for an opportunity to earn a scholarship in the Rock Icon design competition. Over $250,000.00 is then awarded to various students seeking a scholarship.
Student Fashion Designers were given the task of creating distinctive clothing for stars such as Madonna, Beyonce, and David Bowie in this year’s event. The finalist’s in the contest were then required to close the fashion show by showcasing their artistic clothing designs.
Local professional fashion designers including Miss Me Jeans, Elmer Ave, and The Hive participated at the affair by showcasing their exclusive styles for 2009. The judges included season fours Project Runway director Rami Kashou, Jonny Day, co-founder and designer for Elmer Ave., and Preen Magazine editor-in-chief Lily McElroy.
Daniel Magaña ‘s leather corset was modeled by the beautiful Saleisha, who won the “America’s Next Top Model”.
The event also featured plenty of great music. DJ Nicky Savage and DJ Albert entertained the audience with their exceptional tunes, as well as musicians End Roulette and Metroid.
Songwriter, singer, and guitar player Mary Jane Snow of End Roulette inspired hundreds in attendance. Her music reflects on the difficult times she faced while growing up between Minneapolis, London, and San Francisco. The admirable musician is currently recording a second EP called “Classic Disco” and planning to release the full length album by year end.
Metroid put on an exceptional performance as well. The local three member band plays a unique blend of guitar-based rock and electronic disco and pop.
The diverse event was capped off with a live painting display by the talented mural artists of eVocal.
The Fashion Model
By: D.R.A.
She was told as a child that she was an insignia of fine taste,
She was blessed with a perfect figure and walked with ideal grace.
As she grew into her teens envious girls always put her down,
They would gossip about her, so she concealed her beauty with a frown.
She then gained self-confidence and discovered her natural strengths,
So she began to model at 18 and succeeded at length.
Today she is on the cover of several fashion magazines,
She’s an inspiration for all aspirating models still stuck in their teens.
She understands that her physical splendor may one day fade,
But just as the photography of Audrey Hepburn, another classic beauty will be made.
