Skim boarding aka skimming is a surf board sport that goes back all the way to 1920 in Laguna Beach, California where the sport originated.
Skim boards were commonly rounded in dimension and not designed for control but as the years passed the boards have become more aero dynamic. Out went the wood and in came the more modern fiberglass.
Skimming has become a highly competitive sport and competitions are held annually through out southern California. Victoria Skim boards World Championship is one of the most prestigious skim boarding events and is held in Laguna Beach every year.
Only the best of 80 Amateur skim boarders and 60 Pro skim boarders are able to compete in the event.
"With professional and amateur athletes from all over the globe
Battling for the coveted title of 'World's Best,' the two-day action over the weekend will be intense,"
said Trigg Garner, general manager of Victoria Skim boards.
Types of skimboards
The two central types of skimboards are fiberglass and inland boards. Inland boards tend to be made of wood. They are designed for grinding rails and doing stunts in shallow rivers or ponds. Wave boards are designed of carbon fiber with a foam core. They are mainly made to ride waves.
